The town is within the Ria Coast part of the Sanriku Coast. The area is known for its oysters and scallops. It is blessed with various types of seafood, such as Hoya (sea pineapple). The Suzuriishi (the Ogatsu inkstone) is one of the cultural traditions of the area (for printing and building roof tiles), an old practice from the Muromachi period (1337-1573). It is considered a part of the peoples’ folk tradition. The "Ogatsu Hoin Kagura" (a form of theater) is another cultural tradition of the region. Ogatsu is a great town, which is very rich in culture.

Before the earthquake, Ogatsu had a population of about 4300 people. The coastal area was heavily affected by the East Japan Earthquake. Around 8% of the buildings in the town and coastal areas of Ogatsu were washed away. Due to the advanced age of many residents and relocation of many from the area, the population has dwindled down to about 1300 people with about 65% being considered elderly.

Moriumius: The Ogatsu School Regeneration Project
The Ogatsu School Regeneration Project is aimed at revitalizing the old Kuwanohama elementary school, which was abandoned (in 2004 due to depopulation of the area). This project is known as a regeneration project. The area is rich in seas and forests, as a result one can experience the cuisine that has been nurtured by the agriculture, forestry and fishing areas. There are other activities, such as woodworking. Through these experiences it is said that children can "learn the natural order and how to be brave".
(The project) also features accommodation in this area that is rich in nature and traditional culture. This enables us to learn about humans, society, and the world. They aim to connect people from Japan and around the world through the "environmental and social school" project.
In 2013 they started renovation of the elementary school, starting with the buildings and then the baths. They are trying to build the place by hand as much as possible. They also hold a renovation tour on weekends. To date there have been 2500 people involved in the renovation.
When we went there recently we also helped on the renovation project.
We were able to learn, spend a night, and experience the project. By the summer of 2015, they are aiming to have the school fully completed and open.
