The whales have arrived! It's an exciting time
of year to be in Hawaii, especially if you like
whales. This time of year the humpback whales
come to enjoy the warm waters of Hawaii. They
can be seen on every island . Every year
volunteers join in to count the number of
whales they see every 15 minutes. They are sent
to designated spots on different islands and
count the whales on specific days at specific
times. This helps to understand how the humpback
population is doing.from year to year.
This year the first count yielded and average of
4 whales every 15 minutes on Oahu. Other islands
such as Kauai and Maui saw as many as 6 or more
per 15 minutes. These numbers are just an
estimate but give excitement to anyone wishing to
witness the beauty of these whales.
The best known spot to view the whales is on Maui
island , Kaanapali Beach. This area is a great
viewing spot as the whales have been known to love
the waters between Maui and Lanai. Kaanapali Beach
gives a perfect view of this location.
There are many ways to see the whales either from
land or from boat, but if you're lucky enough to
be in Hawaii this time of year, why not take some
time to appreciate and see these magnificent ocean
creatures!
